Who else wants to improve their credit score? If you are anything like the vast majority of people reading this right now, the simple truth is that you are likely a bit ashamed of your credit score and are suffering the side effects of having a FICO that doesn't quite match the standard of living you have for yourself, right? It's true … and especially in these financially uncertain and unstable times, the importance of having a credit rating that is above average has NEVER been higher.
Okay ….. but I don't want to hire one of those credit repair companies to fix my credit. What else can I do to help myself?
Easy. The very first thing you need to do is to grab a copy of your credit reports. It always amazes me how few people know their credit scores, or even what's on their reports at all. Why? Well, statistically, more than 40% of credit files have significant errors on them, (this is not including minor discrepancies …. which would make the percentage closer to 75%) and the Federal government actually mandates that these errors be fixed, and pronto … especially if they are serious enough to cost you a job, credit, insurance or housing.
Can I do all of this myself?
Absolutely. And you are entitled to get your report once a year, from all 3 bureaus … for free! (in one report) You can do this online, and once you have the reports, simply look for errors, or outdated information, and challenge it yourself. Anything that is not 100% correct is required by law to be removed. And the difference between having a report free from such inaccuracies, versus one riddled with errors, could be the difference between living the life you deserve …. instead of settling for one you do not. (no credit repair clinics necessary, either!)
